An emotional and eye-opening stay in Paris for students with disabilities and their tutors from the PHARES programme

Since 2012, Montpellier Business School has upheld its Equal Opportunity Policy with engagement in its PHARES programme: “Par-delà le Handicap, Avancer et Réussir des Etudes Supérieures” [Beyond the Handicap, Move Forward and Succeed in Higher Education]. After nine months of regular support for students with disabilities on campus by MBS volunteer tutors, the programme organised a final cultural stay at the end of April in the capital, a wonderful reward for these young secondary school and college students.

Every Saturday on our premises, ten students in years ten and eleven were followed and mentored this year with the objective of developing skills that allow them to better understand higher education and to develop their potential. Independent of their study project, each student also worked on autonomy, oral fluency, and the ability to work as part of a team through workshops, professional meetings, the creation of a CV and cover letter, as well as creative development activities. In addition to daily coaching, the students participate all year long in excursions which allow them to break away from their daily routines and discover career choice possibilities, ending with a trip to explore another of France’s major cities.

The most recent trip, which took place on the weekend of 21 April, was to Paris! The students with disabilities, accompanied by their student tutors, were warmly welcomed by the diversity office of the TF1 Group and had the opportunity to visit different television sets, including the one used for covering the presidential elections! The stay continued at La Géode at Cité des Sciences with an IMAX screening, then at the Louvre for a guided visit of the museum's 10 greatest masterpieces before setting off on an evening river boat ride. The next day, the weekend ended with an entertaining visit to the Musée Grévin! A very rich, human experience with great moments of friendship as witnessed by Sophie Gosselin, head of the programme: “Each time it’s a moving and enriching trip. After a whole year of effort and work, the students see it as a small blessing and simply enjoy this moment shared with their tutors! It’s an ideal ending to the programme and the opportunity to again create fond memories together.”
